The San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders are set face off at Levi’s Stadium on Thursday night in what might be the last “Battle of the Bay” before the Raiders move to Las Vegas. This game was thought earlier this year to be potentially one of the most entertaining and intriguing matchups on each team’s schedule, but neither team’s 2018 season has turned out as expected, to say the least.
The 49ers will be heading into this game with an injury-depleted roster that features a problem at quarterback in particular, where it’s possible quarterback Nick Mullens could be getting his first ever NFL start. Just about every position on the 49ers roster has been hit by injuries this season, but none worse than quarterback.
The Raiders haven’t avoided the injury bug either, with running back Marshawn Lynch, defensive tackle Justin Ellis and offensive lineman Donald Penn among the notable players they have on injured reserve. In addition to that, they’ve also decided to ship out a couple of their biggest names via trade over the past couple of months in linebacker Khalil Mack and wide receiver Amari Cooper.
So, in a nutshell, the lineups on Thursday night won’t look a whole lot like many expected heading into the season. But with each team heading into the game with just one victory, one of them will be coming away with a much-needed win.
What was once thought to be a battle between Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo could wind up being between Carr and Nick Mullens if C.J. Beathard’s wrist and thumb pain keep him out of action. Beathard is a player for whom who the pain will have to be pretty bad in order to keep him out of action, so odds are he’ll get the starting nod, but it’ll be a close call. Carr has had his ups and downs this season, but he should have an advantage in this matchup.
It looks like Breida, who has been dealing with bumps and bruises throughout the season, will be healthy enough to get the nod this week. The running game has been a strength for the 49ers this season and will probably be something they need to lean on heavily Thursday. Martin is the main man in Oakland now that Lynch is out; he had 13 carries for 72 yards against Indianapolis last week but also lost a fumble.
Garcon, who is still in a 49ers uniform after being the subject of trade speculation for the past few days, could be back in the starting lineup this week after missing the Week 8 game in Arizona due to a knee injury. If he’s not, look for the 49ers to go back to Kendrick Bourne, who had seven catches for 71 yards after getting the start in Garcon’s place. LaFell got the start at wide receiver for the Raiders last week after the Amari Cooper trade, catching three passes for 39 yards after previously being a gameday inactive. Nelson, who the Raiders signed to a two-year deal in the offseason, has 23 catches for 237 yards and three touchdowns on the season.
The 49ers were shorthanded in the middle with the last week with Richburg out due to a knee injury, although the guess is he’ll be back this week. The Raiders appear close to be getting Keleche Osemele back after he missed multiple games with a knee injury of his own. The 49ers currently rank high in the run-blocking categories at Football Outsiders while ranking 26th in pass blocking, while the Raiders are in the middle in each.
Both teams wish they were getting more in the pass rush this season; the Raiders without Khalil Mack are dead last in the NFL in pressures by a wide margin. The Raiders may be getting some help in the middle this week with the return of Eddie Vanderdoes (knee) off the PUP list. Armstead is another 49ers player who was part of trade rumors going around over the past week but will be on the field Thursday.
