The Eagles will begin their Super Bowl defense on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field with a familiar opponent: the Atlanta Falcons.
The Eagles and Falcons faced off in January in a thrilling NFC Divisional round playoff matchup, which the Eagles, of course, won 15-10 en route to a Super Bowl title. Quarterback Nick Foles got the better of Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan in that matchup, and he’ll have the chance to again with Carson Wentz still injured and out.
The NFL finally returns on Thursday night as the Philadelphia Eagles begin their defence of the Super Bowl crown.
Philly face off against the Atlanta Falcons on the opening night, where we will be able to judge for the first time just how possible it is that they become the first team to go back-to-back since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005.
After grinding through training camp and four weeks of preseason games, football is officially back on Thursday night. The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles raise their first championship banner as they host the Atlanta Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field.
This is a rematch of last season’s NFC Divisional Round game where the Eagles defeated the Falcons, 15-10, in Philadelphia. The Falcons had a chance to beat the Eagles, driving within the Eagles’ five-yard line late in the game, but on fourth down, Matt Ryan’s pass to Julio Jones went right through Jones’ hands, forcing the turnover-on-downs and securing the win for Philly.
The Eagles will have Nick Foles under center as they did in the playoff matchup with Carson Wentz still out following knee surgery. Foles completed 23 of 30 passes and had 246 passing yards in the playoff win over the Falcons.
The Eagles resisted the temptation to trade Nick Foles at his peak market value after he miraculously led Philadelphia to the Super Bowl. That will allow the organisation to be patient with franchise QB Carson Wentz in his knee rehabilitation. Much will be expected of Jay Ajayi after LeGarrette Blount’s departure, with the London-born running back looking to take on an increased workload.
Fragility might be found on the defensive line, with Vinny Curry and Beau Allen’s departures and head coach Doug Pederson likely to be cautious with Tim Jernigan following offseason surgery for a herniated disk.
It is staggering to watch Brady performing at the level he is at 41 years old. Most sportspeople are well into their retirement by that age. Ultimately, age has to catch up to Brady at some point – and the moment it does, it could mark the end of the Pats’ dominance.
Defeat to the Eagles in last season’s Super Bowl was a bitter blow for the Pats, who went into the match as favourites.
They have been hit by the loss of defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to the Detroit Lions, while questions have quietly been asked about head coach Bill Belichick. Josh McDaniels staying on as offensive coordinator is undoubtedly a positive, however. ust how do the Pats bounce back from losing last year’s Super Bowl – and can Brady still keep defying his age?
Football is back! For the first time since capturing their first Super Bowl back in February, the Philadelphia Eagles will play in a real football game, as the quest to defend the Lombardi Trophy officially gets underway this Thursday night.
This is the first full game preview I have written since the Super Bowl, and it feels so good to be back! I am sure the rest of Eagles nation cannot wait for the kickoff of the 2018 season as well. As the Super Bowl champions, the Eagles get to host the kickoff game of the NFL season. All eyes will be on the city of brotherly love come Thursday night, and there will be a lot to pay attention to both pre-game and once this game gets underway.
Coming into town for the opener will be the Atlanta Falcons, the team who the Eagles beat in the Divisional Round back in January. As we all remember, that game came down to one last fourth down where a Matt Ryan pass intended for Julio Jones fell incomplete, resulting in a 15-10 Eagles victory and a trip to the NFC Championship game.
So for the first time in team history, Philadelphia will open the season as Super Bowl champions, and before Thursday`s game, we will get to see the Eagles unveil their first ever Super Bowl championship banner at Lincoln Financial Field.
